Below is the text of a resolution adopted by the City of Chicago in honor of William Hohri
A resolution adopted by the City Council of the City of Chicago, Illinois
Presented by Alderman Edward M. Burke on December 14, 2011
WHEREAS, William Hohri has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of eighty-three; and
WHEREAS, the Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, A native of California, William Hohri was the loving and devoted husband of Yuriko; and
WHEREAS, William Hohri was the much-adored father of Sylvia and Sasha and the grandfather of three to whome he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities which he possessed in abundance; and
WHEREAS, As a teenager, William Hohri was confined to the Manzanar internment camp where he and fellow Japanese-Americans endured poor living conditions and physical and emotional strain; and
WHEREAS, At the conclusion of World War II, William Hohri traveled to Chicago, earning a degree from the University of Chicago before joining the nation's first generation of computer programmers; and
WHEREAS, William Hohri was the lead plaintiff in a lawsuit which demanded restitution for the Japanese-American internees and was instrumental in convincing the United States government that such action was both appropriate and just; and
WHEREAS, William Hohri was a lover of cinema and classical music, and authored three books which focused on the internment of Japanese-Americans during the war; and
WHEREAS, William Hohri inspired the lives of countless people through his great personal goodness, charity and concern; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, dedication and sacrifice of William Hohri serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, William Hohri will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives and friends; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, William Hohri imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this fourteenth day of December, 2011, do hereby commemorate William Hohri for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of William Hohri.
